Peyronie’s disease causes the penis to become twisted or curved. It may result in pain, erectile dysfunction (ED), and organ shortening.

Scar tissue that grows within the penis in Peyronie’s disease causes the curvature. Flat lumps can form as a result of scar tissue, which can be felt just under the skin. Internal scarring may also cause the organ to develop a faint hourglass shape or form a band of hard tissue.

Peyronie’s disease can either go away on its own or worsen, so an experienced urologist will diagnose the problem and take steps to alleviate the symptoms as soon as possible. Getting a diagnosis will help you get on the road to effective care.

Diagnosing Peyronie’s Disease

The doctor will conduct a physical exam during which he will palpate the flaccid organ and search for plaque deposits in the penis in order to diagnose Peyronie’s disease. Using this method, he will determine how much scar tissue you have.

Your urologist will also want to examine how your penis curves during an erection. This condition produces a curve in some cases and a banding effect in others, as if a belt were wound around one side of the organ.

He would do this by injecting a drug into the organ that will cause an erection. The doctor may take measurements of it, and an ultrasound scan may be performed to obtain internal images. The ultrasound will look for plaque formation (amount and location), blood flow, and any other problems.
